This Japanese ring-spinning machine, produced by the same company, is considered the oldest of its type still in use today. In contrast to modern ring-spinning machines, the 'Ishikawadai' operates at a considerably slower speed—about one-third of that of its contemporary counterparts. However, this reduced speed offers intriguing benefits. It applies minimal stress to the cotton fibres, allowing their natural qualities to emerge. As a result, the fabric has a distinctive, uneven texture reminiscent of hand-spun cotton, a characteristic that is nearly impossible to achieve with automated machines. The intentional irregularity in the fabric gives it an authentic, almost vintage look that distinguishes it from the uniformity typical of today’s mass-produced textiles.
